Parent FAQ
Hopefully this list will help answer some questions Freshman/new Dragon Football parents may have. If you have more questions you believe should be added, let us know.
When will I know which team my son is on?
Team rosters take time to form so please be patient. Team assignments are never announced prior to the first scrimmage of a season to give you an idea. Rosters can still fluctuate during the first games and throughout the season if position needs arise. Player evaluation is an ongoing process.
When will we know jersey numbers and will my son have the same number throughout high school?
Varsity players choose their jersey numbers based on availability. Returning Varsity players can keep their number or request a new one the following season. Freshman and JV players are assigned jersey numbers. Not all jersey sets have all numbers available due to various reasons so as players progress, their jersey number will likely change at least once from freshman to Varsity.
Does my son have to ride the bus to and/or from away games?
All players of all teams ride the bus together to away games. Varsity players also ride the bus back with their team.
JV and Freshman players may be checked out from away games to ride home with their parent/guardian if requested. A parent/guardian must complete the checkout form online prior to each game. This form will be provided via Sports You. A separate form must be completed for each away game if you are driving them home. Players are only allowed to leave an away game with a verified parent or guardian.
Can we provide our own helmet?
You do NOT have to provide your own helmet. This is just for those who choose to do so. Yes, you can bring your own helmet provided the following:
-
The helmet must be a new, approved helmet with a purchase receipt.
-
Before purchasing a helmet you can send a photo to rock_at@roundrockisd.org to be sure it is an approved helmet if you are unsure.
-
No youth sizes allowed.
-
Riddell SpeedFlex and Riddell Axiom are encouraged as can be fixed or adjusted easily as needed with parts and tools on hand.
-
Helmets are "donated" to school so RRHS can assume reconditioning and ensure the safety of helmet from season to season. Your son is issued back his same helmet at equipment checkout and can take it home after his time with RR Football ends.
If I have a specific question regarding my player, who should I contact and how?
Encourage your son first to speak to his position coach himself about any situations or concerns. Freshman parent communication can be directed to Coach Solemsaas (aka "Coach Saas") at Brian_solemsaas@roundrockisd.org or Coach Gesch at jordan_gesch@roundrockisd.org . All JV and Varsity parent communication should go to Coach Gesch.

Please respect the athletic handbook guidelines that clearly state it is never appropriate to contact coaches regarding the following :
-
playing time
-
team strategy
-
coaching decisions including position placement
-
any other student athlete

If my son is injured either during football or outside of school, what should we do?
If your son is hurt or injured, he should always notify the Athletic Trainers. This allows your player to be assessed and any documentation necessary to be entered into the system so all coaches are aware. Coaches will then know if participation is to be modified prior to a practice or off-season workout.
For sprains, strains, injury recovery, etc. the training room is open before school. Athletes can receive treatments to help keep them on the field or help them return as quickly as safely possible. Just FYI, if outside medical attention is deemed necessary, the Athletic trainers can usually get players appointments with the team doctor and/or physical therapist faster than parents. If a serious medical need arises outside of school you should always seek immediate medical attention. The Athletic Trainers should be informed so that the situation is documented and coaches can make any team adjustments and/or change your son's participation expectations if necessary.
Please note: If you do take your son to a medical professional outside of school, coaches are required to follow all medical doctor instructions. Your son will not be allowed to participate until they have official documentation from that doctor stating he is cleared to do so. Additionally, if your son can participate in any capacity, you'll want the doctor to be clear in documentation as to what is allowed. For example: if your son has a leg injury but can safely do seated upper body exercises, be sure that the doctor states such on the documentation so he doesn't miss out on more than he has to.
